Race Report: NOVA Time Trial 1600

Joining the Northern Virginia Running Club (NOVA) for 2022 was a great decision. Tuesday track nights feature workouts with way more volume than I’d do on my own, and the team spirit helps on race day too. The first track workout of June was a 1600m time trial.

Training: I’ve done a few track-specific workouts focusing on mile and 800 speed for the upcoming track season. Sessions like 6x600 in 1:40-1:45 and fast 150s with 50m jog intervals have been tough but helpful. An 8x200 workout saw a few 25s which was encouraging.

Results: Kind people encouraged me to take the rail and pace. Splits were 69, 2:20, 3:31, and finish in 4:35. Track temperature was in the high 80s low 90s with decent humidity. The group behind slowly broke up but several guys kept contact. Hearing footsteps helped me keep up the tempo. I felt surprisingly strong in those conditions. A 4:35 is a nice confidence booster heading into regional championships on June 11-12.

Final thoughts: NOVA is club running at its best. The group is full of supportive, hard working teammates who are ready to push each other to be better.
